Get Involved

Therapeutic Ride Algoma is always open to new participants who are interested in our program. We seek to build blissful memories and create unforgettable experiences.

To participate in the program, all rider candidates must have a Referral form completed. For riders with physical disabilities, a medical doctor must complete the medical Referral form. For riders without physical disabilities the Referral form may be completed by another professional such as a psychologist, occupational therapist, speech language pathologist, etc.

Riders will be added to our waiting list once the Rider Application package, including medical referral form has been received.

Visit our Participant Sign Up page to start your application!

As an entirely volunteer-based organization, the TRA program is made possible each year by certified volunteer instructors and dedicated volunteers. Therapeutic riding requires three volunteers for each rider; one horse leader and two side-walkers (to assist the rider as required). Though many volunteers have experience with horses or have worked with people with disabilities, neither is a prerequisite. We provide a volunteer training program at the start of each riding session, and informal training is provided throughout. We have a variety of volunteer positions available, whether you are a horse enthusiast or someone who loves to organize special events, we can put your skills to use! Possible volunteer opportunities include:
  • Horse-handling
  • Grooming
  • Tacking up
  • Side-walking during lessons
  • Fundraising
  • Administrative and Board activities.
  • General maintenance, repair and gardening around the property
Volunteering with TRA provides the opportunity for a rewarding experience to build new relationships and skills!  We welcome any students looking to complete hours for their curriculum. To be a volunteer you must be 16 years of age or older.   If you are interested in joining TRA, please complete the Volunteer Application Form.

TRA Instructors are CanTRA-certified and require specialized and continued training to ensure their knowledge is up-to-date.

We are currently seeking qualified individuals who are interested in becoming an Instructor. TRA can provide payment for instructors, and if you are interesting in becoming certified, TRA may be able to provide funding for individuals looking to complete their CanTRA training.

" Working with TRA as a volunteer has been a magical experience for me. The work is life changing and incredibly fulfilling. To see the incredible joy on a persons face the second they get seated on one of the horses just
warms your heart. Every moment with each
horse and rider is special! "
